Global exports for animal feeds were worth a total US$21 billion in 2023.
The animal feeds metric, which excludes amounts for pet dog and cat food sold by retail sellers, reflects a 34% advance from $15.7 billion five years earlier in 2019.
Exports of dog or cat food put up for retail sale totaled $24.8 billion for 2023, outperforming the amount for exported animal feeds by 18.2%.
Year over year, animal feed exports declined by -3.5% compared to $21.7 billion for 2022.
The 5 biggest exporters of animal feeds are the Netherlands, United States of America, Germany, Belgium and mainland China. Combined, that quintet collected 47.8% of global sales from exported animal feeds in 2023.
Among continents, suppliers in Europe sold the highest dollar worth of exported animal feeds during 2023 with shipments valued at $12.9 billion or 61.3% of the animal feeds total. In second place were exporters located in Asia at 19% while another 12.5% of worldwide shipments for animal feeds originated from North America.
Smaller percentages came from Latin America (5.5%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Africa (1.4%), and Oceania (0.4%) led by Australia and New Zealand.
For research purposes, the 6-digit Harmonized Tariff System code is 230990 for preparations used in animal feeding. That code excludes dog or cat food sold at the retail level.
