What’s Nick Cave reading on holiday?

I take advice from my favourite writers on what to read. This morning, Nick Cave wrote about his holiday reading list on The Red Hand Files. Here it is. I reckon I’ll toddle off and go get a couple of these to read slowly, over a period of months, tiny bits at a time. That seems to be all I have time for these days. They will probably be The Kingdom, by Emmanuel Carrère, and Clete, by James Lee Burke. I’ve added the book covers to his post, below, except for the new anthology by Willam Seidel of which he has an advance copy, so no cover yet.

Nick Cave never disappoints in his Red Hand Files writings. He is such an erudite and well-read man. As you can see by this list, there is only one book on the list which is light reading, or fairly straightforward fiction – Clete. He is a more hard-working reader than I am.

The Red Hand Files-ISSUE #278 / MARCH 2024
NOT THE ACTUAL PLACE
How’s it going lately?
JOHN, BRISTOL, ENGLAND

What are you reading?
FRAN, LUDINGTON, MICHIGAN

Dear John and Fran,
I am happy. I am tired. I have just arrived at a place by the sea and I am officially on holiday! Once I have finished this letter, I will be switching off my laptop and my phone, and going totally offline for a few weeks. My plan is to just eat, swim, read and hang out with my wife.
I grabbed a bunch of books before Susie whisked me away –
The Kingdom by Emmanuel Carrère – recommended to me by someone on The Red Hand Files, I don’t have your name to hand, but thank you.

So What by Frederick Seidel – an advance copy of the new collection by my favourite living poet.
Reading Genesis by Marilynne Robinson – very excited to start this!

Clete by James Lee Burke  – the latest book by the greatest crime writer of them all.

Zero at the Bone: Fifty Entries Against Despair by Christian Wiman – Christian’s book, My Bright Abyss was, for me, a literal Godsend.

See you all back here on The Red Hand Files in a few weeks!
 Love, Nick
