Exports of red meat continue to thrive worldwide, despite potentially negative effects on consumers’ health. The value of red meat sold on international markets totaled US$94.5 billion in 2020.
Global sales of exported red meat accelerated by 26.3% since 2016 when overall red meat exports were worth $74.8 billion. From 2019 to 2020, total exports of red meat flatlined but still increased in value by 1.3%.
The United States of America is the overall king of red meat exporters, ahead of Australia and Brazil. America delivered $12.6 billion worth of red meat to its trading partners in 2020, equivalent to 13.3% of the total $94.5 billion of all countries.
It is a different story, however, when it comes to the world’s top exporters for specific types of fresh, chilled or frozen red meat.
Spain collected $6.5 billion for its shipments of pork, the world’s second-most valuable red meat export. Australia is the number 1 shipper of both sheep and goat meat by value, earning $2.6 billion from exports of sheep meat and $102.8 million for exported goat meat. Meanwhile, Belgium took the crown as the top exporter of horse meat sending $53.4 million worth of exported equine meat to its customers.

Fresh, chilled and frozen beef took the title as the most valuable type of exported red meat in 2020, attracting 52.8% of international sales.
Ranking second were pork exports (39.2%) trailed by lamb (7.3%), horse meat (0.4%) then goat meat (0.3%).
