Overall sales of exported figs flatlined by an average 1.2% since 2018 when globally exported figs sales were $583.5 million.
Year over year, the dollar value of exported figs shrank by -22.8% compared to $765.4 million for 2021.
Figs are edible fruits from small flowering trees with white bark. While figs are eaten fresh or dried, they are also processed into jams, biscuits, rolls and other types of desserts.
The 5 biggest exporters of figs (Türkiye, Afghanistan, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands) generated about three-quarters (75.5%) of all international figs sold during 2022.
Applying a continental lens, countries in Asia sold the highest dollar worth of exported figs during 2022 with shipments valued at $415.1 million or 70.3% of the global total. In second place were European exporters (23.8%). Smaller international sales of figs originated from sellers in North America (2.9%), Latin America (2.5%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Africa (0.4%) and Oceania (0.1%) mostly Australia.
Shifting our focus to fig imports, the 5 leading importers of figs in 2022 are Germany, India, France, United States of America, and Austria. Combined, that quintet of top import countries bought 44.1% of globally imported figs.
Those percentages suggest a more concentrated cohort of 88 total figs exporters (75.5% for corresponding top 5 exporters) compared to 170 buying countries, islands and territories with the top 5 importers consuming under half (44.1%).
Of the global imports total, 55.4% of figs were delivered to European countries ahead of importers in Asia (27.5%), North America (13.3%), Africa (1.9%), Oceania (1.6%) mostly Australia plus New Zealand, then Latin America (0.4%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.
Worldwide, we calculated the average unit price paid by figs importers to be $4,443 per ton in 2022. That dollar amount reflects 10.4% in inflation compared to the average tonnage rate of $4,023 for 2021.

Among the top figs exporters, there was a trio of gainers namely: Austria (up 20.7% from 2021), Greece (up 10.3%) and Peru (up 9.2%).
Those countries that posted declines in their exported figs sales were led by: Afghanistan (down -59.3% from 2021), Iran (down -50.2%), Syria (down -46.5%), Italy (down -36.4%) and France (down -29.9%).
