Total combined exports of walnuts, whether or not shelled, from all countries totaled US$3.1 billion in 2023.
That dollar amount results from an average -19.4% decrease for all global shippers of walnuts from $3.83 billion 5 years earlier in 2019.
Year over year, revenues generated from the international sale of walnuts posted a -13.6% drop compared to $3.57 billion starting from 2022.
The 5 biggest exporters of walnuts are the United States of America, Mexico, mainland China, Chile and Germany. Collectively, that cohort of exporters shipped nearly four-fifths (83.8%) of walnuts sold on international markets in 2023. That percentage indicates a relatively high concentration of sellers.
Walnut Exports In-Shell Versus Shelled
The value of exported in-shell walnuts amounted to $1.06 billion in 2023, compared to $2.03 billion for shelled walnuts. The latter dollar amount for shelled walnuts accounts for more than three-fifths (65.6%) of overall exported walnuts compared to 34.4% for in-shell walnuts.
The value of globally exported in-shell walnuts depreciated by -31.3% since 2019 and shrank by -14.7% versus international sales in 2022.
In comparison, worldwide exports of shelled walnuts fell by -11.3% compared to 2019 and dropped by -13% from one year earlier in 2022.
Among continents, walnut suppliers located in North America shipped the highest dollar worth of exported walnuts (both shelled and unshelled) during 2023 with shipments totaling $1.5 billion almost half (48.6%) of the global total. In second place were exporters in Asia at 21.9% while 14.8% of worldwide walnuts shipments originated from Europe, with another 14.4% sent from Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.
Tinier percentages came from sellers in Africa (0.21%) and Oceania (0.1%) mostly Australia.
