Global purchases of imported diamonds cost a total US$101.2 billion in 2023.
Overall, the value of diamonds bought by all importing countries dropped by an average -7.6% since five years earlier in 2019 when diamond purchases totaled $109.5 billion.
Year over year, the dollar sum paid for imported diamonds fell by -22.5% compared to the $130.5 billion starting from 2022.
Collectively, the top 5 buyers of imported diamonds are India, United States of America, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates then Belgium. Added together, that cohort of major diamond imports purchased over three-quarters (76.4%) of internationally sold diamonds in 2023.
From a continental perspective, Asian countries spent the most on imported diamonds during 2023 with purchases amounting to $64.3 billion or 63.5% of the global total. In second place were North American importers at 19.2% while another 14.9% of worldwide diamond imports went to European countries.
Smaller percentages went to buyers in Africa (1.9%), Oceania (0.4%) led by Australia and New Zealand, and Latin America (0.1%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.
For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix is 7102 for non-mounted and unset diamonds.
