The 5 biggest exporters of petroleum gas in 2023 (United States of America, Norway, Australia, Qatar and Russia) sold over half (55.5%) of globally exported petroleum gas as measured by dollar value.
Approaching one quarter (23.3%) of worldwide petroleum gas exports were supplied by member countries of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries compared to roughly one-fifth (20.2%) during 2022. OPEC is an intergovernmental entity comprised of 13 countries.
Shifting to a continental perspective, countries in Europe sold the highest dollar worth of exported petroleum gas during 2023 with shipments valued at $151.6 billion or 31% of the global total. In second place for 2023 were Asian exporters (including those in the Middle East) collecting a 29.9% share. Shippers in North America supplied another 16.6% while competitors in Oceania accounted for 11.7% led by Australia and Papua New Guinea.
Smaller percentages came from suppliers in Africa (9.5%) and Latin America (1.2%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.
For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix is 2711 for petroleum gas and other gaseous hydrocarbons.

Export Countries Enjoying Greatest Trade Surpluses for Petroleum Gas
The following countries posted the highest positive net exports for petroleum gas during 2023. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the surplus between the value of each country’s exported petroleum gas and its import purchases for that same commodity.
- Norway: US$61.8 billion (net export surplus down -57.1% since 2022)
- United States of America: $51.5 billion (down -28.6%)
- Qatar: $50.7 billion (down -40.6%)
- Australia: $50.6 billion (down -19.6%)

- Nigeria: $6.3 billion (down -13.8%)
- Indonesia: $5.1 billion (up 3.4%)
Norway generated the highest surplus in the international trade of petroleum gas in 2023. In turn, this positive cashflow confirms Norway’s leading competitive advantage for this specific product category.
Export Countries Incurring Biggest Trade Deficits for Petroleum Gas
The following countries posted the highest negative net exports for petroleum gas during 2023. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the deficit between the value of each country’s imported petroleum gas purchases and its exports for that same commodity.
- mainland China: -US$80.8 billion (net export deficit down -6.9% since 2022)
- Japan: -$52.8 billion (down -27.3%)
- South Korea: -$40.8 billion (down -27.5%)
- Italy: -$31.7 billion (down -52.5%)
- France: -$29.3 billion (down -42.7%)
- Germany: -$27.5 billion (down -56.6%)
- India: -$24.5 billion (down -23.2%)
- Netherlands: -$23.7 billion (down -10.3%)
- United Kingdom: -$21.2 billion (down -57.1%)
- Taiwan: -$13.4 billion (down -35.4%)
