En s'inspirant de trois Évangiles qui en font état, le peintre Franz von Stuck a représenté l'obscurcissement du ciel (le soleil noir d'une éclipse) lors de la mort du Christ sur la Croix, tout en faisant rayonner sa tête baissée comme un nouveau soleil. Il montre ainsi que le Christ est devenu à ce moment la véritable lumière du monde. En une seule image, cet artiste de grand talent est parvenu à transmettre le récit de la Passion et à faire comprendre son message profond.
